So as I predicted along with many, the Huskies are national champions. However, this was a way closer game than anyone expected. Way under the 35 I threw out there earlier.
This win brings up the question: when is Geno Auriemma going to make the move to men's? Is it inevitable? Not necessarily. Pat Summit is the greatest women's basketball coach in NCAA history, and she's stayed at Tennessee all these years.
And that ends another year of college basketball. It's been a season filled with surprises as it is every year. UCONN were the clear favorites to win it all, but not Duke.
On Selection Sunday, many were complaining that Duke didn't deserve a number one seed over West Virginia.
Next year should be a lot different. In men's basketball, North Carolina has a strong recruiting class coming in and will definitely be a force to be reckoned with. The tournament may be expanded to 96 teams. Coaches will switch to bigger schools. Others will be fired. If Greg Monroe returns to Georgetown, they have to be considered the favorite to win it all going into the season.
AU has a strong class coming in next year as well. They should definitely eclipse the eight win mark they had this season.
As for the women's game, we all know who the favorite is. You know, that team that hasn't lost since two seasons ago. The last time UCONN lost, Tiger was a golden boy, Manny was a future Hall of Famer, and the Jersey Shore was known by most Americans as a vacation place.
It's been a great year for college basketball. I know it will never happen, but the BCS should take notes. Have some kind of tournament. Give us something. There is a reason March Madness is the greatest sporting event in the world.
